F.A.Q. & watercare tips
What is AquaFinesse?
AquaFinesse is a natural, environmentally friendly water treatment system. Although it is important to note that AquaFinesse itself is not a sanitiser, it does play a vitally important role in the control of bacteria. To understand how AquaFinesse works we must first understand the real cause of bacterial contamination -Biofilm!
What is Biofilm?
Biofilm is a sticky slimy substance that is created by bacteria for use as a safe shelter, feeding and breeding ground.
Bacteria enter the water via many various sources, not least bathers. Needing somewhere safe, bacteria create a slime which enables them to stick to any damp surface area. (In your pool or spa this could mean the walls, steps, filter housing, jets and favorite of all, the pipe work) Once attached they are able to quickly form colonies.
Biofilm is designed to protect the bacteria within, and it does an excellent job. So much so that it is virtually impossible for traditional sanitisers such as chlorine or bromine to penetrate it. Even large quantities of sanitiser can only kill the bacteria in the outer layer of the Biofilm leaving the bacteria below unharmed and able to continue multiplying!
FACTDid you know that 99% of all bacteria live in the Biofilm, just 1% actually live in the water itself and it is only these so called 'free floating' bacteria that we are able to kill with traditional sanitiser's such as chlorine or bromine!!
How does AquaFinesse work?
The moment AquaFinesse's patented formula is added to the water it begins the process of breaking down and loosening the Biofilm from surfaces. With no shelter to protect them, bacteria are exposed and vulnerable. It is now a simple task to destroy them with a minimum amount of sanitiser.
Bathers reentering the water will of course still introduce fresh bacteria, however now everything is different. No longer able to 'stick' these bacteria are quickly coagulated by AquaFinesse's patented technology and washed into the filter system where a small amount of sanitiser rapidly dispatches them!
Frequently asked questions – AquaFinesse Spa
Can I use AquaFinesse in any spa - old or new?
AquaFinesse can be used in any spa, old or new, so long as it has an effective filtration system (removable/cleanable filters) and a means of providing water circulation through the filters for at least 4 hours a day.
Can I use AquaFinesse in a spa that already has chlorine or bromine in it?
If the spa has just been filled with water and ‘shocked’ then you can switch to AquaFinesse.
For a spa that has had Chlorine or Bromine in it for a week or more we recommend that you firstly drain the spa and refill with fresh water before using AquaFinesse.
The best results are achieved by using the AquaFinesse Spa Clean product to deep clean your spa before swapping onto AquaFinesse. This will ensure that old slime, grime and calcium are removed from surfaces and pipe work.
Are AquaFinesse products simple to use?
Yes, all AquaFinesse products are designed for simple use. Most products can be administered within a couple of minutes on a weekly basis, and all products come with easy to understand, clear instructions.
Which sanitiser is best to use with AquaFinesse?
AquaFinesse is normally supplied with a chlorine tablet and a slow release dispenser, however this can be substituted for chlorine granules or bromine dependant on personal preference and the spa manufactures recommendations.
Do I need to shock the spa water first?
No, you don’t have to shock the water after you’ve filled the spa and before using AquaFinesse. If you have concerns about the quality of your mains water (i.e. if it is from a spring or well) then you can shock it after which you should wait 12-24 hours for the Free Chlorine level to drop before using AquaFinesse.
When using AquaFinesse, we do recommend fortnightly shocking/oxidizing of the water this helps to destroy organic wastes, body fats and oils that the filter is unable to remove. It also helps keep the water crystal clear.
I’m using AquaFinesse and the spa water seems to be cloudy – what am I doing wrong?
If you have not deep cleaned your spa with a Spa Clean tablet prior to commencing with the AquaFinesse treatment, it is possible that you may experience some cloudy water during the first few weeks.
This cloudiness is not generally a problem but simply a sign that AquaFinesse's formula is doing its job and deep cleaning the pipe work and surface areas. This cleaning or conditioning process should not take very long (a few weeks maximum)for newer spas with no significant Biofilm build-up, the conditioning process may take only a few days.
Please read the following check list to eliminate other possibilities.
Here is a simple check list
Check your pH level it should be between 7.4 and 7.6. If it is not you may use a pH reducer or increaser to correct the levels.
Check that your Total Alkalinity level is between 125 - 150mg/l. Adjust if necessary.
Check that your filtration system is set on a minimum of 4 hours per day. Adjust if necessary
Check that your filters are cleaned regularly. This means at least once a week
Check that the sanitising tablet has not run out (for trichlor or bromine users) or that the recommended amount of sanitising granules has been added (for dichlor users)
Check that your swimwear is not being washed in detergent
Check that spa users are showering before use
If you are in any doubt please contact your local AquaFinesse dealer for advice.
How often should I clean/change the filters in the spa?
AquaFinesse places a lot of emphasis on the filters doing their job properly during the first week to 10 days of its introduction into your spa. You can help this process by cleaning the filters daily and drying them before re-introducing them into the spa. After the initial conditioning period you should clean the filters weekly.
We recommend purchasing a second set of filters to rotate; this will allow each set to dry out thoroughly in-between usage.
What’s the best way to clean the filters?
AquaFinesse Filter Cleaning Tablets, just follow the simple instructions on the side of the tub
How often should I change the spa water?
Every 3 to 4 months.
Is it safe to drain the water onto the garden?
Yes, AquaFinesse is environmentally friendly so it will not damage your garden, plants etc.
What happens if I overdose the spa with AquaFinesse?
This can have a detrimental effect on the filters, which may mean a complete drain and refill of the spa and cleaning of the filters, dependant on how much AquaFinesse has been used. Please contact your local AquaFinesse dealership for advice.
Can I use aromatherapy products with AquaFinesse?
Yes, so long as they are crystal based and not oil/liquid based.
