Medical

AquaFinesse Medical applications are based on the experience with AquaFinesse products used in water treatment. Tests have shown that AquaFinesse products, although human and environmental friendly, work effective in different applications to destroy the 'structure' and 'viability' of the biofilm. This is because the microbial growth and microbial processes which are responsible for causing Microbial Influenced Corrosion (MIC) stagnates. Therefore the product is a valuable additive in medical applications.Open surfaces will directly be conditioned by adsorption of organic and anorganic compounds followed by settlement of bacteria.
Bacteria migrate to surfaces and attach improving their biotope by excretion of exopolymeric substances (xPS), forming gel like matrices in which the bacteria are enclosed and protected. Eventually, areas of these matrices will join and form a contiguous biofilm. Microbial multiplication in the biofilm, incorporation of organic material and microbes will lead to an increase in the size and stability of the biofilm. For medical applications, the mode of action of AquaFinesse has a high level of similarity with the mode of action against biofilms generally. Biofilms consist of extra cellular polymeric substances (xPS) with specific bacterial populations living in the biofilm. This ensures the bacteria can create their own favourable physiological-chemical conditions at certain locations in the biofilm to ensure an optimal metabolic performance.
AquaFinesse medical products can open doors that have been closed until now, because we have had to depend on the action of biocides like hypochlorite for treatment of open sores which only mitigate the upper layer of the biofilm. Therefore a temporary result is mostly seen after treatment, but on the long term a cure is almost impossible. Once the bacteria have recovered they will act as before and continue destroying. The extremely good healing results experienced with ulcus cruris are based on the hypothesis that the debris inside the wound which is a mixture of dead epidermal cells and blood cells forming the substrate for bacteria. The common cleaning action with hypochlorite will only clean and kill the outer side of the debris in the wound, leaving enough bacteria alive for rapid regrowth. Destroying the structure and viability of the biofilm will make the bacteria more sensitive to biocide.
The 'protection shield' is damaged and the structure is opened by the use of AquaFinesse medical. By damaging the 'protection shield' a biocide can work much more effectively, even inside the biofilm, where the biocide had little effect previously. The best results are achieved by cleaning with AquaFinesse medical liquid (50 ml AF per 10 L clean water of 30-40 degrees Celsius) followed by the use of a disinfectant. Treatment of wounds like an open sore in the traditional way does not have a significant effect because the debris layer is not loosened from the tissue. AquaFinesse pre treatment will loosen the layer allowing an oxidizer to do it's job much more effectively. In practice we have seen that infection will be stopped and healing will occur. Results show that ulcers which had been treated with no positive results for a year can be healed within 4 to 6 weeks.
